We have a problem because people are the problem

The Anti Expert Pandemic. I know better.

Saturday Thought of the day:

I find it amazing the ignorance of people.

When they went to school did they think they knew better than the teacher and that 2+2 did not = 4, but it made 5.

So if they accepted lessons at school and passed exams why are they so high and mighty as to reject experts, who have far more qualifications than them. Why do they also reject logic.

Of course they may have bunked off from school and failed exams, but there is an apparent link between brexiteers and climate change deniers.

I am often countering comments such as climate change is a hoax, and Brexit is good for Britain. It is easy to fly swat these people after a quick 30 seconds search on google, comes up with the article to exactly set them straight. Capisce !! They then go away, but whether they are converted from ignorance is another matter.

The problem is, we have a problem, and people like them are the reason we have a problem.

It is as if the only solution is to give these people their own land, their own nation, complete with barbed wire - electric fence borders, and say there now carry on in your own little space and try not to kill each other.

Brexit voters almost twice as likely to disbelieve in manmade climate change

Poll shows Brexiters are also more likely to think media exaggerates agreement on climate science, distrust scientists and oppose windfarms

President Chump hated experts and preferred to rely on his gut feeling

Michael Gove, Co-Convenor of Vote Leave, has attracted sharp criticism after telling an interviewer “I think people in this country have had enough of experts”. He compared the actions of economists who have warned of the impacts of the UK leaving the EU with the Nazi smear campaign against Albert Einstein. Mr Gove was also encouraging people to turn a blind eye to the assessments of not just Her Majesty’s Treasury, but also those of independent experts, such as the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

Brexit support and climate denial have many similarities. Many Brexit Leave campaign leaders also deny the dangers of human-caused climate change. Older generations were more likely to vote for the UK to leave the EU and are more likely to oppose taking action on climate change; younger generations disagree, and will be forced to live with the consequences of those decisions. On both issues there’s also a dangerous strain of anti-intellectualism, in which campaigners mock experts and dismiss their evidence and conclusions.

Pounding the table with arguments about unelected Brussels burdening us with regulations, the Leave campaign again did its best to avoid facts. Instead, the appeal was to hard-wired instincts of English exceptionalism The New York Times refers to this as a campaign “with sharp tones of xenophobia, racism, nativism and Islamophobia.”

In fact it is worse than just ignorance. The Gullible do believe in the rich and powerful and their vested interests, and their money backed propaganda. So they are more likely to believe a proven liar like President Chump, or Michael Gove, or Boris Johnson, than a qualified person who has passed lots of exams in his working life, and has no axe to grind, just facts and knowledge.

We need a better debate on our place in the global economy and ecology – not inaccurate nostrums put forward by a secretive network of the mega-rich and their ideologues.

Leading figures in the Vote Leave referendum campaign to take Britain out of the EU have links to a controversial climate-sceptic think tank and question the science behind global warming.

The group’s three leaders Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and figurehead Lord Nigel Lawson have cast doubt over man-made climate change, which is backed by most of the world’s credible experts.

In conclusion, there is no under estimating the ignorance and apathy of the British population as a whole.

Apart from rounding people up for compulsory adult education evening classes, and scrapping TV sets and News Print works, I do not know what the answer is, except to plod on. Because if I give up the idiots win and my grandchildren suffer. Allan Sharpe founder
