A Special Report From fracking to poor health, living in Conservative Blackpool is not a Pleasure Beach. Leeds and Blackpool suffer worst life expectancy decline in the last decade, ‘alarming’ new data shows
‘For such declines to be seen in “normal times” before the pandemic is alarming’
“That’s the normal way of business for gangsters.
When we were fighting the fracking we all realised that the Tories were criminals. Nobody listened or took us seriously. But we knew we were just the start. The thin end of the wedge.
It was a wake up call that proved you can’t trust them an inch. In Freckleton near Blackpool. they were elected back then promising localism. Many locals did mammoth amounts of research and campaigning. We won the Parish Councils, the Borough Council and the planning applications with the County Council. Based on the facts. It was a massive task.
But then Savid Javid just ignored it all and overturned it all.
We appealed and won one of the two sites but the other went ahead. The industry appealed and we won that as well.
Peoples lives on hold for 5 years. That’s before needing to protest 24/7 for 2 years in all weathers."

Frack us back from the brink! Boris Johnson wants to level up Blackpool. It's sitting on a goldmine of shale gas we've never needed more. So is it time to end the hostility?
Independent August 2019 Fracking suspended in Blackpool after biggest earthquake yet
Critics warn mining for shale gas also damages countryside and keeps UK hooked on fossil fuels instead of focusing on renewables to help tackle climate change.
"But we still vote a lap dog in with a massive majority.
Beggars belief.
He has voted party line every time for years with one solitary abstention.
Even dafter is that Blackpool South, one of the most deprived areas in the country voted Tory and Brexit."
Voters in pro-Brexit Blackpool, 67.5% wanted to leave the EU. Blackpool received an EU investment of £14 million to purchase and develop important tourist landmarks such as the Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens entertainment complex under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), an EU fund that aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion in the EU by investing .
"This is despite the EU paying to repair the tram track and new trams. Plus the essential sea wall and fancy promenade. Plus getting the sewers cleaned up. Beggars belief.
Blackpool is consistently top of all the stats for numbers vs capacity and local population it serves. It’s very annoying that they get no thanks for that and just criticism for the towns being bottom of the health statistics.
They have the hardest mountain to climb. Lots of people in poor health and social needs, holiday visitors and all the risks that brings and the lowest standards of living in the whole country.
They deserve more support and some praise!
The media interviews people in Blackpool to see if they would vote Tory again and they said yes"

The British Medical Association has launched a campaign to urge politicians to close the gap in life expectancy between areas of the North West and parts of London.
Researchers from Imperial College London recently found that there is a 27-year gap between the life expectancy of a man living in Kensington and Chelsea and Blackpool.
The study, which has been published in The Lancet Public Health journal, analysed all deaths in England between 2002 and 2019. It then worked out the life expectancy for different communities, based on the death records in those places.
It found that while life expectancy rose in most places during the first decade of the millennium, from 2010 it began to decline in some places.
Areas in London and the home counties still continued on the path of living longer - but life expectancy fell in some urban parts of Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool where life expectancy was below 70 for men and 75 for women.
By 2019, the researchers say there was a 20-year gap in life expectancy between a woman living in Camden (95.4 years) versus a woman living in one area of Leeds (74.7 years).
Prof Majid Ezzati, from the university, said: “There has always been an impression in the UK that everyone’s health is improving, even if not at the same pace. These data show that longevity has been getting worse for years in large parts of England."
“Declines in life expectancy used to be rare in wealthy countries like the UK, and happened when there were major adversities like wars and pandemics. For such declines to be seen in ‘normal times’ before the pandemic is alarming, and signals ongoing policy failures to tackle poverty and provide adequate social support and health care.”
He added: “The post-COVID ‘Build Back Better’ agenda can create an opportunity for better health, but it currently does not focus on equity and the resources allocated to ‘levelling up’ agenda are too little to address these concerning trends."
“To level up health, the government must make significant investments in people, communities and health services to first reverse this deterioration of health in so many communities.”
Dr Arif Rajpura, director of Public Health at Blackpool Council, said: “As a local authority, we are wholly committed to improving the life chances of our residents.
“There are multiple aspects that contribute towards low life expectancy in both women and men including, drug and alcohol abuse, low wage, poor housing and deprivation, as well as poor educational attainment.

Boris Johnson October 2021
Johnson replied: “I’ve given you the most important metric – never mind life expectancy, never mind cancer outcomes – look at wage growth.
“Wage growth is now being experienced faster by those on lower incomes. It hasn’t happened for 10 years or more. That is what I mean by levelling up.” Inflation is now 6% Crime Minister
